The Prayer Book and Me

Please don’t switch off yet – it’s not too boring!

For my 21st birthday my precious friend and flatmate gave me a prayer book that cost one shilling and sixpence. I cherished that gift for dear life, and some years later I had it leather-bound to protect it against the slings and arrows of life.

Recently I wanted a recap on the ‘10 Commandments’ and reached for my prayer book, only to discover that it was written in Latin. I had clean forgotten! With such a heavy heart, I closed it and returned it to my locker. I am presently 92 years old, and in this nursing home with all the time in the world to think of my 21st and young days.

My dear friend is living nearby in Malahide and we still keep in touch. In a minor way, I like to think I returned that cherished gift by introducing my good friend to her husband. Sadly, both our darling husbands have died – RIP.

Still I have that prayer book, which I have carried from Carlow, Kildare (where I changed digs four times!), then to Donabate and Swords in Dublin. Finally, here to my home in TLC. We – the prayer book and I – look a bit weary and frayed around the edges but we have endured, as has my friendship with my friend Mary, 71 years later.
